Thirty churches from across South Wales are opening their doors for a week-long festival celebrating their rich history and heritage.Churches Unlocked runs from 3rd- 11th June and features more than 100 events including walks and talks, family fun, music, arts, workshops and Welsh language events.Sarah Perons, Churches Development Officer at Llandaff Diocese, has been the driving force behind the Churches Unlocked Festival. She said: “We were delighted with the success of our first Churches Unlocked last year. Building on that momentum we are thrilled to see the enthusiasm with which our churches have embraced the concept of Churches Unlocked and are preparing to welcome visitors to these wonderful buildings.”This is the second year Llandaff Diocese has taken part in the festival and has been joined this year by Monmouth Diocese – making the festival even bigger and better! The Rt Rev Cherry Vann, Bishop of Monmouth, said: “It has been said that churches are sermons in wood and stone. They tell a story, the story of the Christian faith and of the faith of those who have worshipped in the building for generations. My hope and prayer is that by unlocking our church buildings and welcoming visitors in, we might point them to our faith in Jesus Christ; a faith that has inspired, nurtured and strengthened countless people down the ages. A faith which continues to do so today.”The Rt Rev Mary Stallard, Bishop of Llandaff, said, “It is wonderful to see churches in South Wales coming together to celebrate the rich heritage they have to offer. I am looking forward to joining in with this and visiting festival churches and schools as they bring gifts of music and the arts to community celebrations. It also great to see all the churchyard events that highlight important issues around biodiversity and the environment.”There are loads of events happening across the week, so why not visit www.churchesunlocked.org and find out more about what’s planned for your area.
