Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

WELLBEING

In the Diocese of Monmouth, wellbeing is not an add-on—it’s part of our culture. We believe that caring for others begins with caring for ourselves and one another. Whether lay or ordained, staff or volunteer, we are all called to serve from a place of health, balance, and support.

We launched our Diocese of Monmouth Wellbeing Guide in 2023 and updated it in 2024.

A Culture of Care

Our diocesan values—love, generosity, joy, humility, integrity, and courage—shape how we care for people. Wellbeing is woven into our culture, not just through policies, but through the way we lead, relate, and work together.

We are building a culture where:

  • Self-care is encouraged, not seen as selfish
  • Teamwork and gratitude are part of daily life
  • Boundaries are respected, and rest is valued
  • Support is available, and no one is expected to carry everything alone

Supporting One Another

We encourage open, honest conversations about capacity, expectations, and wellbeing. Ministry Area Councils, clergy, and diocesan staff all share responsibility for:

  • Promoting healthy working patterns
  • Supporting spiritual and emotional wellbeing
  • Creating realistic expectations
  • Saying thank you often—and meaning it

Shared Responsibility

Wellbeing is a shared commitment. It reflects our belief that how we care for one another is part of our witness. As we grow spiritually and numerically, we are committed to moving together—with compassion, balance, and grace.
