Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

DIOCESAN NETWORKS

In 2022, we established a series of diocesan networks to strengthen two-way communication, deepen collaboration, and ensure that decisions affecting the whole diocese are shaped by those living and leading in our Ministry Areas.

These networks are a vital part of our diocesan culture—rooted in co-creation, shared leadership, and mutual support.

Purpose of the Networks

The networks exist to:

  • Facilitate open dialogue between diocesan leadership and Ministry Area leaders
  • Co-create solutions to shared challenges and opportunities
  • Ensure decisions are informed, practical, and grounded in local experience
  • Strengthen relationships across the diocese
  • Support spiritual and numerical growth during a time of change

By involving as many people as possible in shaping our direction, the networks help us move forward together, in step with our vision and values.

Who’s Involved?

We currently hold three network meetings per year for the following key roles:

  • Ministry Area Leaders
  • Vicars and Curates
  • Ministry Area Wardens
  • Lay Co-Chairs
  • Ministry Area Treasurers
  • Ministry Area Property Leads
  • Ministry Area Safeguarding Leads

In 2026, we will also launch a Lay Ministry Network, further expanding opportunities for connection, collaboration, and shared learning.

A Culture of Listening and Learning

The networks are more than meetings—they are spaces where we live out our diocesan culture. They reflect our commitment to:

  • Transparency in decision-making
  • Inclusion of diverse voices
  • Trust between local and diocesan leadership
  • Joyful collaboration in the service of the Gospel

They have already proved invaluable in helping us work more effectively across the diocese and ensure that our shared decisions are appropriate, practical, and mission-focused.
