Within our current climate, many of our churches, parishes and Ministry Areas are facing far bigger challenges than were anticipated when the committee structure was drafted in the Church in Wales Constitution.
The Bishop has embarked on his audit of all Ministry Areas in the Diocese to help Parishes and Ministry Areas to face these challenges. An output of the audit for each MA is a list of recommendations to help them to further their mission and ministry. These recommendations are wide-ranging, and many will be challenging to implement.
The CPC is ideally placed to support the Bishop in providing practical guidance to MAs to take forward his recommendations and to make their vision a reality. Additionally, the CPC will assist the Bishop by reviewing the progress of the audits for each MA on an annual basis and providing their specialist advice.
The constitutional role of the committee to provide a recommendation to the Bishop on church redundancies and to make decisions on Diocesan grant applications will all become part of the same process of supporting the development of the Ministry Areas to achieve their vision.
Given the diverse nature of the specialisms outlined above and the practical advice and guidance that the members will be offering it has been agreed that two separate working groups are required. These working groups will be:-
The Mission Action Working Group
This group consists of specialists in Ministry and Worship; Mission; Outreach and Community Engagement; and Education, Children and Youth. Its members will be asked to share their skills, experience and guidance to help and encourage Ministry Areas to take forward the Bishop’s recommendations in these areas.
The Mission Action Working Group meetings will be chaired by the new Director of Mission.
The Mission Support Working Group
The second group consists of specialists in Buildings/Property; Finance and Governance. Its members will, similarly, be asked to share their skills, experience and guidance to help and encourage Ministry Areas to take forward the Bishop’s recommendations in these areas to support the mission and ministry in the Diocese.
The Mission Support Working Group meetings will be chaired by the Archdeacon of Newport.
