Text block 1

This year, Archbishop Cherry recorded her Christmas message for the diocese at the Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary's Church, Risca.Surrounded by beautiful trees and awe-struck toddlers, the venue seemed very fitting for what she had to say.Her message focusses on children and the fact that behind the sparkle of Christmas, lots and lots of children and young people are struggling. She was struck by some startling statistics following a meeting at the recently opened Children's Society in Newport and this inspired her message. She reminds us, that "Central to all this is the child at the heart of Christmas; the child whose birth is the reason we have Christmas at all."Jesus was born into poverty. His parents were forced to flee their homeland. He became a refugee before he was two years old. And yet he is the one in whom all our hopes and needs and longings are fulfilled. For in his birth we see God coming to us and living as one of us: loving and holding us as his precious children through all the pains and the challenges of life."

This Christmas, we celebrate the child at the heart of the season—Jesus, born into poverty yet bringing light and hope to the world. His birth reminds us that God is with us, loving and holding us through every challenge. As a diocese, we look forward to 2026 with a renewed focus on the social justice branch of our vision. Our churches already do so much to share God’s love and joy in their communities—feeding the hungry, supporting families, and standing alongside those in need. In the year ahead, we will celebrate this work and seek new ways to extend that love even further. We will strengthen support for our churches and build partnerships with organisations that share our commitment to justice and compassion. So, this Christmas, let us feel God’s love and the hope and joy of the Gospel within us all. May this season inspire us to bring light to others and work together for a world where every person knows they are valued and loved.Join us on this journey. Come and celebrate with your local church this Christmas, and discover how you can be part of spreading hope and love in 2026—within our diocese and beyond.
