St Stephen’s Church in Pill, Newport was a hive of activity last week as volunteers joined forces to help pack and deliver 1500 bags of treats to make Christmas a little brighter for those who are struggling.Bags of Hope is a community project which began in 2020, delivering 250 bags. It has grown year on year, with the last two years seeing 1500 deliveries.Volunteers came from a mix of cultures and groups from within the community and Newport, but some came from as far away as Gloucester! Church people, community people, the local police and pupils from Pill Primary School all rolled up their sleeves to help, resulting in 1500 bags being packed in record time.The bags included grapes, apples, satsumas, cake, peanuts, cheese crackers, dates and even some chocolate! They are a gesture of hope, good will and community. One of those who received a package, said “It was a lovely surprise today when I received my bag of goodies from St Stephen’s Church! Thankyou very much to all involved.”There were even lots of people asking how they can volunteer next year!Well done to everyone involved!
