Text block 1

The Rt Revd Cherry Vann, Bishop of Monmouth has announced details of this year's Lent Appeal.Supporting vital projects in both Gwent and the Highveld, our appeal for 2025 focusses on two related issues; positive masculinity and domestic abuse.Bishop Cherry, explains: "There are many forms of abuse, usually but not exclusively against women, and they are common here in the UK as well as in South Africa. We will be supporting work that seeks to combat violence and sexual exploitation and support those who have suffered from it."Our link diocese of the Highveld is working hard to respond to gender-based violence which, sadly, is a cultural norm for so many in that part of the world. Part of the Highveld’s response is to work with young boys, often from vulnerable backgrounds, to give them to the tools to deal with situations they face in the home, in their communities and at their schools. They want to take groups of boys away weekends to teach them how to combat low self-esteem and depression, a culture of violence and aggression against women and the drug abuse and even suicide that are so prevalent. Our Lent Appeal will help fund these weekends away and also provide the boys with much needed resources such as food parcels, stationery and school uniforms to help boost their confidence and self-esteem.Closer to home is Cyfannol Women’s Aid which supports people across Gwent who have experienced any form of domestic abuse or sexual violence. With offices in Pontypool, Newport, Ebbw Vale and Abergavenny, Cyfannol provides a range of services that include drop-in and crisis support, refuge accommodation, specialist counselling and support networks. Our Lent Appeal will not only raise funds to support this vital work but also raise awareness of the issues and how we can help make a difference in our local communities.
