In January 2016 the appointment of Safeguarding Support Officers across each of the Dioceses of the Church in Wales heralded the creation of the Safeguarding team under the leadership of Elaine Cloake (Head of Safeguarding).
The development of this team strengthens the commitment of the Church in Wales to safeguarding children and Adults at Risk in our churches and communities through ‘Safe Church’ Training.
The safeguarding team was established following the recommendations of the Historic Cases Review published in 2011.
In the Diocese of Monmouth our safeguarding team consists of Jim Thompson (link to Safeguarding Support Officer new page) who is Safeguarding Support Officer (training) and Linda Neal who is the Safeguarding Support Officer (administration), both Jim and Linda are based in the Diocesan Office. Jim and Linda will provide a new tier of specialist support to colleagues in Parishes and Ministry Areas.
A key priority for the Safeguarding Officers will be to help deliver ‘Safer Church’ training to laity which will include the revised Safeguarding Policy of the Church in Wales which was published in April 2016. Jim and Linda will also be available as a point of contact to provide advice and support on Safeguarding Policies and procedures, including advice on policy and safe recruitment including the requirements for DBS checks.
It is important to note that the Support Officers will not be involved in the investigation of any safeguarding allegations or child protection concerns, which will continue to be reported to the Provincial Safeguarding Officers.
Jim and Linda can be contacted by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or mobile 07881 016185.
