Adrian Price and Michael Topple were commissioned as new members of the Holywell Community in Abergavenny by Rt Revd Richard Pain, Bishop of Monmouth, on 4 September at St Mary’s Priory Church, Abergavenny.
Speaking at the commissioning, Bishop Richard, who is the Community’s episcopal visitor, challenged the Community, along with family and friends and those who came to share and support the commissioning, to not become too complacent and settled, but, by following the rule of Benedict, to step aside from the lifestyle and attitudes of society, and become gospel people, a people whose rule of life encapsulates the values Jesus taught.
Bishop Richard said: “The fresh season of the Holywell community is an opportunity for all its members to live the way of Christ, in unsettled joy. To grow as people and to create a community which is placed in the world but challenges its presumptions. The Holywell community is to be a sign of the gospel, a pioneering base that will encourage and inspire others. We will pray for you as you pray for us.”
During the Service, the Prior Canon Mark Soady, read from the Rule of St Benedict the spirit of which the Community follows, “First of all, every time you begin a good work you should pray to him with total commitment to bring it to perfection, so that he who has already been kind enough to count us as his sons will never be disappointed by our doing wrong”.
Having blessed their Pectoral crosses Bishop Richard commissioned the Lay members, ”The people of God are called by him to be the Eucharistic community in the church and in the world, and to live lives in thanksgiving to God for all that he has done for us in Christ. You have been called to fulfil that life in a particular way .We praise God who called you and equipped you for His service and we thank you for responding so readily to that call”.
As well as Commissioning Adrian and Michael, Bishop Richard also re-commissioned Sam Patterson and Amy Pope as Lay Members, and Revd Sarah Gillard-Faulkner as Sub-Prior and Canon Mark Soady as Prior.
